RIC CROSS

When were you formed?

Ric Cross has been on and off and through a variety of forms dating back to the spring of my freshman year- so just over three years now. We’ve been calling ourselves Ric Cross for about a year now though, and most of our newer tracks date back to November of this year.

Members and what they play?

Carson “Parsons” Potter - lead guitar

Jordan “Jordy” Burns - Bass guitar

Nicky “Ricky” Pyle - drums

Dan “Dozer” Dozark - keyboardist

Eric “Ric” Cross (that’s me) -  lead vocals, rhythm guitars, keyboardist.

How would you describe your sound?

I think it’s hard to describe myself. It’s sort of an electronic bedroom pop with an r&b feel. Inspired by a variety of sounds (i.e. Frank Ocean, Dirty Projectors, James Blake, Phoenix, Miguel, and of course Drizzy.)

Story behind the name?

It’s actually my name without the “E” in Eric. We used to go by “E.L. Cross,” but deemed it sounded too much like a middle-aged fantasy writer’s name. Hence Ric Cross. Also, it’s commonly mistaken for the name of the rapper, Rick Ross- which I find rather amusing.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Probably the Ty’s list party last spring. Great crowd, long set, and cool arrangements in that show.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

I want to play on Dillo Day because it’s the tightest gig Northwestern has to offer, and this is my last one.

W.O.R.D. (World Order Rap Domination)

—

When were you formed?

Andy and P.T. have kinda always been here. Jeff and Jim joined in January 2013.

Members and what they play?

Albert Hong/Albie tha Hypeman - Hypeman, counsilor

Andrew Zheng/E.T. tha Illegal - Synthesizers, electronics

James Jonathon Pinkl Honda/James Jonathon Pinkl Honda - Auxiliary Percussion

Jeffery McGuire/Gordon Benz’ - Rapping

Jolisha Johnson/Jolene Johnson - Singing

P.T. Bell/One Bell - Electric bass, back-up vocals, digital signal processing

How would you describe your sound?

Imagine a hypothetical collaboration between “Los Angeles”-era Flying Lotus and The Mars Volta, except Tom Pridgen is still TMV’s drummer, and Young Chop is his spiritual adviser now.

Story behind the name?

We took the name from a friend who’s no longer with us. Now that he goes to school in Atlanta, we figure he won’t mind. We figured it was pretty appropriate as well: Our members represent many of the WORLD’s ethnicities and cultures; we ORDER air molecules to vibrate at the resonant frequency of the universal consciousness; one of our members can RAP; we’re geared toward utter DOMINATION through and with compassion. World Order of Rap Domination. W.O.R.D.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

We played at the Cooperation Operation in Pullman in January. It’s our favorite because One Bell rapped a bit, but he forgot his lyrics, so he compensated by making out with, then getting the crap kicked out of him by, then blues dancing with some dude. Everybody danced. It was nice.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

We want to spread the principles of ignorance and compassion to the Evanston community, while promoting performances of individuality in an egalitarian framework, so long as they don’t impinge on any person’s agency. Also, A.) We like to play. A lot. B.) We wanna roll with Danny Brown.
