We want to take a moment to address the concerns about our delayed announcement of

the 2013 Dillo Day nighttime headliner. As with everything else Mayfest and

programming-related, our goal is to entertain and engage the student body, and we want

to take this as an opportunity to deeply apologize for the lack of information regarding

our nighttime headliner.

Our main focus as an organization is to cater to the needs of the student body in a final

celebration of the end of the school term, and we sincerely apologize for the frustration

that everyone is currently feeling.

Rest assured, we are doing absolutely everything in our power to announce our headliner

and finalize contracts as soon as we possibly can. We have been working tirelessly for the

past weeks to make sure that this information comes to you as swiftly as possible, while

balancing our mission to protect the safety and integrity of the University—we apologize

that the process has not been more transparent.

As most of you know, due to Northwestern’s legal standards and processes, we cannot

announce artists until the contracts have been agreed upon and signed by both parties (the

artist’s representatives and the University). We are grateful to our advisors and the

Northwestern legal department, who have worked alongside us in expediting this process

to ensure that Dillo Day is safe and enjoyable.

We are in the final stages of the contract process and will have an announcement

tomorrow afternoon (specific time TBA). This year’s contract process has been uniquely

demanding; please know that we would not be waiting this long to announce unless we

had absolutely no other choice.

Because the headlining slot is brought to us in association with the Residential Hall

Association (RHA), we will be making our announcement through their Facebook, so

please direct yourself to their page by “liking” it and you will receive the most up to date

information about our nighttime artist. Once again, please accept our deepest apologies

for this delay. We still intend on having a kick-ass day on Saturday and we cannot wait to

see you all roll out onto the lakefill to party-down with us. We could not be more excited

about our current lineup; we have the utmost confidence that this year’s festival will be

fantastic. Thank you all so much for your patience and trust.

Here’s to Dillo 2013.

So, I'm confused by your answer to the previous question about guests who are over 19. Do they just need a valid state ID or something proving their age?

All non-Northwestern students need a wristband. Guests over 19 do not need to register ahead of time for that wristband and can pick it up on the day of Dillo Day with their state-issued ID.

Here’s a helpful guide to our 2013 wristband policy.

Northwestern students can register two under 19 guests.

If you are over 19 your state-issued ID will get you a wristband.

Evanston residents over 25 can register up to 4 under 19 guests.

All guest wristbands will be linked to their host or chaperone via a serial number.

Northwestern students do not need a wristband.

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8...

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8 of this year’s bands. Check back all week for more information about these awesome student artists including footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

ADDY

—

When were you formed?

Addy was formed in January, 2013.

Members and what do they play?

The current members of addy are (left to right in the picture) Cam LeCrone (drums), Andy Henley (bass), Max Paymar (keys), Zach Puller (guitar), Eliza Palasz (vocals), and Lillie Cummings (vocals).

How would you describe your sound?

Indie Pop

Story behind the name?

The name Addy was originally inspired by a girl in a CNN investigative report on the effects of marijuana usage on driving skills (here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw1HavgoK9E). We’re not necessarily trying to pay tribute to that video at all times, however, by having the band name addy. As a band name, it works because it’s short and memorable, it’s playful and not too imposing, and it’s reminiscent of a handful of other fun words and phrases.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Addy hosted a house show on 4/20 which went particularly well. We played in a semi-flooded basement on Gaffield, along with three other bands, and had a really great turnout. Other than a few electrical issues that we ran into, things went smoothly and there was a really killer energy in the air. People were getting stoked.

Complete the statement: “I want to play Dillo Day because…”

Addy wants to play on Dillo Day because we want to open for Danny Brown against his will.

Catch Addy live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8...

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8 of this year’s bands. Check back all week for more information about these awesome student artists including footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

NEBULA

—

When were you formed?

We were formed in October 2012 in the Phi Mu Alpha basement, starting out as a space-rock project.

Members and what they play?

Evan Bakker — singer/guitarist

Jake Besen — drums

Stuart Babcock — bass

How would you describe your sound?

Cohesive pop songs with a lingering element of space-rock and large reverberated guitar sounds.

Story behind the name?

We were originally obsessed with the idea of being a “space-rock” band, so we wanted a name to reflect a space theme.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Our unanimous choice for favorite show is Dance Marathon 2013. We played in front of over 1,000 Northwestern students and completely re-energized them after 20+ hours of dancing.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

“I want to play on Dillo Day because many students on campus would like to see us again after Dance Marathon, and we would love to be a part of the best day of the year, rocking out on the lakefill!”

Catch Nebula live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8...

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8 of this year’s bands. Check back all week for more information about these awesome student artists including footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

Juc E Frut

—

When were you formed?

Basement of Lodge. We will never apologize for this historical fact. If Jesus can be born in a feeding troth a evade the judgmental glances of his ‘fans’, we can be born in the basement of Lodge… we are not promising salvation, but we do listen in on your prayer time.

Members and what they play?

Tarik plays keys and vocal chords, Mikey plays drums, Paul plays vocal chords, Rohan, Thaddeus, and William plays bass/guitar… there is a vibraphone somewhere though. The Horn Section play the horns :)

How would you describe your sound?

The post-colonial, post-structural dynamism of African diaspora as a fluid space; an ungovernable non-entity of counter-hegemonic and subversive Being, so, yeah.

Story behind the name?

You don’t want to know, even though we are well aware that you do want to know (as indicated by your direct and unmistakable inquiry), you would change your mind if you knew…you would wish you hadn’t.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

2012 Mayfest Battle of the Bands because, for all intents and purposes, we ‘shut it down’.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

…the stage is hella big and the fish should get to hear some music too.

—

TURNT

—

When were you formed?

The beginning of Winter Quarter 2013. (We’re pretty new.)

Members and what they play?

Blake Johnson: Guitar/Vocals

Adrian Kirn: Bass

Tommy “Turnt” Carroll: Drums

Chirag Gupta: Drums/Percussion

How would you describe your sound?

Indie Pop/Blues

Story behind the name?

We started out playing at open mic night at Kafein, and one night the guy that went on before was a DJ. He actually set up a full DJ table on the tiny stage and started addressing everyone while they quietly studied and sipped coffee as if they were in a dance club. He blasted his music and yelled into his microphone “is everybody TURNT tonight?” Our reaction was, “yeah, I guess we are turnt.”

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Our favorite show so far was playing at the Cubby Bear in April, because it was great to play at such a big venue and be able to see Wrigley across the street. It was also a charity event for a South American healthcare mission, so it was good to play for a good cause.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

We’re from Texas! Or at least 2 of us are (Blake and Chirag). And seeing as Dillo Day was founded by Texan NU students, it seems right. We also just love to play for people who are having a good time, and we want to get our music heard.

—

APPOMATTOX TRAP HOUSE

—

When were you formed?

We were formed at some point last year, probably on a late rainy night.

Members and what do they play?

Here’s our current crew:

Gideon Resnick: Trumpet and mouth singing/rapping

Adam Slater: Rapping/singing

Ben Strick: Keyboards

Ryan McCrimmon: Beatmaster

Tommy Carroll: Drums

(Potential additions to our live show):

Susie Neilson: The Golden Pipes

Potentially Bassist and Guitarist TBD

How would you describe your sound?

A wild mix of trap, rap, R&B and funk.

Story behind the name?

Sometimes words sound fantastic together; and historical references are a speciality.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Hopefully BOTB!!

Complete the statement: “I want to play Dillo Day because…”

I want to play on Dillo Day because it would just be fantastic; this student body has given me so much and I’m pumped to play some stuff for them.

Catch Appomattox Trap House live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

In anticipation of the 2013 Battle of the Bands we’re profiling...

In anticipation of the 2013 Battle of the Bands we’re profiling all eight of this year’s contestants. Check back all week for a Q&A with each band as well as footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

MORI AND THE MOONWALKERS

—

When were you formed?

The current band lineup was formed only a few weeks ago, but some of us have been playing in bands together for years (since high school).

Who are the band members and what do they play?

Mori Einsidler- vocals and guitar

Alex Beer- lead guitar. Andrew Schneider- bass

Andrew Abramowitz- drums.

How would you describe your sound?

We play pop-sensible songs and dress them up in indie rock.

Story behind the name?

Each of Mori’s bandmates have, at some point in their lives, placed in the top 3 at Michael Jackson look-alike contests. The decision was pretty much made for us.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

A different formation of our band played at Abbey Pub two years ago. It was not a very well-attended or publicized show, but we played a great set and best of all, a new fan even offered Mori his sweater vest to keep (she politely declined).

Complete this statement: “I want to play Dillo Day because…”

…because what dumb-dumb wouldn’t want to open for Smashmouth? That’s like opening for the Beatles, except waaaay better.

Catch Mori and the Moonwalkers live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

Check back all week for more information about these awesome student artists including footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

RIC CROSS

—

When were you formed?

Ric Cross has been on and off and through a variety of forms dating back to the spring of my freshman year- so just over three years now. We’ve been calling ourselves Ric Cross for about a year now though, and most of our newer tracks date back to November of this year.

Members and what they play?

Carson “Parsons” Potter - lead guitar

Jordan “Jordy” Burns - Bass guitar

Nicky “Ricky” Pyle - drums

Dan “Dozer” Dozark - keyboardist

Eric “Ric” Cross (that’s me) - lead vocals, rhythm guitars, keyboardist.

How would you describe your sound?

I think it’s hard to describe myself. It’s sort of an electronic bedroom pop with an r&b feel. Inspired by a variety of sounds (i.e. Frank Ocean, Dirty Projectors, James Blake, Phoenix, Miguel, and of course Drizzy.)

Story behind the name?

It’s actually my name without the “E” in Eric. We used to go by “E.L. Cross,” but deemed it sounded too much like a middle-aged fantasy writer’s name. Hence Ric Cross. Also, it’s commonly mistaken for the name of the rapper, Rick Ross- which I find rather amusing.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

Probably the Ty’s list party last spring. Great crowd, long set, and cool arrangements in that show.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

I want to play on Dillo Day because it’s the tightest gig Northwestern has to offer, and this is my last one.

Catch Ric Cross live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling...

In celebration of Battle of the Bands 2013 we’re profiling all 8 of this year’s bands. Check back all week for more information about these awesome student artists including footage from their live from the Mayfest office performance!

—

W.O.R.D. (World Order Rap Domination)

—

When were you formed?

Andy and P.T. have kinda always been here. Jeff and Jim joined in January 2013.

Members and what they play?

Albert Hong/Albie tha Hypeman - Hypeman, counsilor

Andrew Zheng/E.T. tha Illegal - Synthesizers, electronics

James Jonathon Pinkl Honda/James Jonathon Pinkl Honda - Auxiliary Percussion

Jeffery McGuire/Gordon Benz’ - Rapping

Jolisha Johnson/Jolene Johnson - Singing

P.T. Bell/One Bell - Electric bass, back-up vocals, digital signal processing

How would you describe your sound?

Imagine a hypothetical collaboration between “Los Angeles”-era Flying Lotus and The Mars Volta, except Tom Pridgen is still TMV’s drummer, and Young Chop is his spiritual adviser now.

Story behind the name?

We took the name from a friend who’s no longer with us. Now that he goes to school in Atlanta, we figure he won’t mind. We figured it was pretty appropriate as well: Our members represent many of the WORLD’s ethnicities and cultures; we ORDER air molecules to vibrate at the resonant frequency of the universal consciousness; one of our members can RAP; we’re geared toward utter DOMINATION through and with compassion. World Order of Rap Domination. W.O.R.D.

Favorite show played? When/where/why?

We played at the Cooperation Operation in Pullman in January. It’s our favorite because One Bell rapped a bit, but he forgot his lyrics, so he compensated by making out with, then getting the crap kicked out of him by, then blues dancing with some dude. Everybody danced. It was nice.

Complete the statement: “I want to play on Dillo Day because…”

We want to spread the principles of ignorance and compassion to the Evanston community, while promoting performances of individuality in an egalitarian framework, so long as they don’t impinge on any person’s agency. Also, A.) We like to play. A lot. B.) We wanna roll with Danny Brown.

Catch W.O.R.D. live at this year’s Battle of the Bands this Thursday at 27 Live!

Get to know the DJs

In anticipation of Mayfest’s Battle of the DJs Thursday, we sat down with the six student performers to see what’s up before their big show.

DJ Wade

Mayfest: For starters, tell us about your experience DJing.

DJ Wade: I’ve been doing it for three years now. Throughout high school, I would DJ at birthday parties, bat mitzvahs, sweet sixteens and stuff like that. It was kind of my summer job. I actually didn’t bring my turntables out here until after spring break, I haven’t done much at Northwestern.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

DJ Wade: I’d say house and moombahton, I like to add in hip-hop to make things interesting.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

DJ Wade: I would really like to sound like Diplo. I think Diplo does a really good job of keeping EDM music interesting, incorporating a lot of different genres. He’s produced a lot of hip-hop tracks and I think that’s something great for EDM.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

DJ Wade: I think I’m a lot more fun. People in EDM tend to take themselves too seriously. I’ll be a little looser on stage, just trying to have a good time. I won’t worry too much about what I’m doing and just have a huge dance party.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

DJ Wade: Energetic.

—

DJ NN

Mayfest: Tell us about your experience DJing.

DJ NN: It’s mostly just a hobby, I haven’t done any major events or anything. I started doing it for fun in high school, so I did it at my friends’ parties and stuff, but nothing too big. I haven’t really done any events at Northwestern, but I do practice a lot and make mixes.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

DJ NN: I try to mix a variety of genres, but I’d say my main genres are trap and hip-hop.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

DJ NN: I really like TNGHT. Lunice and Hudson are both two of my favorite DJs, it’s one of the great collaborations.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

DJ NN: I’m going to try to keep the crowd on its feet, do something for everyone, keep everyone dancing and moving and having a good time.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

DJ NN: I’m gonna go with twerkin’.

—

Luccii

Mayfest: Tell us about your experience DJing.

Luccii: I’ve been DJing and mixing for about a year. That’s about all my experience, haha. I’ve never played a show at Northwestern.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

Luccii: Progressive house music. It’s the genre I like the most.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

Luccii: Alesso. His music is so melodic and happy, it just makes you feel good.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

Luccii: I’m not very serious. I can make people laugh.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

Luccii: Massive.

—

Snad

Mayfest: Tell us about your experience DJing.

Snad: I started DJing in 11th grade producing in 10th grade, and I’ve been making mixes ever since. I started out just producing and then moved to turntables and making mixes. Now Sam [the other member of Snad, along with Shyam] and I use CDJs. Last year we were runners up at Battle of the DJs and I’m a part of Street Beat at Northwestern. I have a weekly radio show where I play progressive house, deep house, as does Sam. He’s got his own show where he plays deep house and tech house and techno.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

Snad: Deep house, tech house and techno. That’s the sound we’re really into, it’s what we like. It’s not overdone to the point where you hear it too much, crowds still lose their shit.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

Snad: Oh, that’s a tough question. Hmmm, I really don’t know who we’re trying to sound like. Maybe Dusky? You can say that we’re just aspiring to be our own niche sound.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

Snad: Well, we produced some of the stuff that’s in our mixes. We’ve done these tracks over the past two years playing together. It’s a culmination of everything that we’ve been doing for the past two years. Once you hear the type of shit that we’re dropping and what everyone else is, you’ll understand where we are with our music.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

Snad: Deep. That’s totally a buzzword these days.

—

KaitoS

Mayfest: Tell us about your experience DJing.

KaitoS: I DJed at a hookah bar for some of my senior year of high school, I did blocks in Dance Marathon last year, during fundraising events, formals, general house and frat parties.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

KaitoS: Mostly EDM, some rap, progressive house.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

KaitoS: I believe it’s like a mix between Arty and Hardwell. Let’s go with that.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

KaitoS: I just love sharing my music, my purpose is to help everyone else have a good time listening to the music I love.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

KaitoS: I’m definitely gonna say immense.

—

Behind These Eyes

Mayfest: Tell us about your experience DJing.

Behind These Eyes: Well I’ve played music all my life, I picked up DJing when I got to school here because I found out about Street Beat at WNUR. Every night from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. people are live DJing on the radio. I signed up and apprenticed and they basically taught me how to DJ with the equipment. That was when I got here my freshman year, so it’s been almost two years that I’ve been actually DJing. I’ve also been making tons of music on my computer.

Mayfest: What music is most prominent in your mixes?

Behind These Eyes: I’m mostly into bass music, I got into dubstep, hip-hop, rap, and I like trap music as well. Anything bass oriented, most of the music is like breakbeat, so not house music but the opposite, anything that’s evolved from hip-hop.

Mayfest: Who’s one artist that you either think you sound like or you hope to sound like?

Behind These Eyes: I don’t try to sound like anyone, but there are some artists that I look up to. One of my favorite producers, I know this sounds cliche and a lot of people would make fun of me for it, is Skrillex. I genuinely think he’s a great songwriter, he just does a great job on the computer. Besides him, I listen to a lot of music, so some people I really like are Flux Pavilion, basically that whole genre of British dubstep so Flux Pavilion, Doctor P. I really like Diplo too, he’s one of my all-time favorite musical acts.

Mayfest: And why do you deserve the Dillo Day stage? What makes you stand out over the other DJs?

Behind These Eyes: What makes me stand out is that I’ve been playing music, not just on the computer. I’ve been playing guitar and stuff all my life. I started making beats on the computer when I was around 10. I just feel like I want to pursue music as a career and it’s my favorite thing to do in the world. I have a lot of experience and I’ve put so much time into it. I feel like I have the drive to do my best and win this whole competition. I’m stoked.

Mayfest: One word to describe the performance you’ll give tomorrow?

Behind These Eyes: Rampage!
